RWLO Title: Modeling Data - Building Permit Data
RWLO Address: http://www.rwlo.org/users/1/Real%20World%20Learning%20Objects/Mathematics/Modeling%20Data%20-%20Building%20Permit%20Data/Modeling_Data_-_Building_Permit_Data.doc
Description:
Using data from the United States Federal Statistics database, students will plot building permit data over a period of time for specific cities in the United States. Students will determine a mathematical model that best fits the data. Students will make predictions regarding the number of permits to be issued for a particular year.
Course: I often give dementrations to English classes trying to show them how to download and use graphics in their papers. This RWLO will allow me to be concise in the way I demonstrate Excel to these students.
Rationale: Extracting Data from website/entering information into Excel/Creating Charts in Excel
Setting/Delivery: Presentation
Why did I choose this RWLO: This RWLO seems perfect for this particular type of demonstration, if I have enough time to use it.

RWLO Title: Using the Equation of a Line to determine the Rotational Rate of the Sun
RWLO Address: http://www.rwlo.org/users/1/Real%20World%20Learning%20Objects/Mathematics/Using%20the%20Equation%20of%20a%20Line%20to%20Determine%20the%20Rotational%20Rate%20of%20the%20Sun/Using_the_Equation_of_a_Line_to_Determine_the_Rotational_Rate_of_the_Sun.doc
Description: This RWLO uses Sunspot data to help students understand coordinate graphing and linear equations.
Your Course: I would implement this RWLO in my Beginning Algebra classes, and in the Geometry course for Elementary Education Majors where we do a unit on graphing and linear functions.
Rationale: This RWLO provides very compelling data for the students to graph and examine. Much more so than traditional textbooks. I suspect that most students have never examined sunspot activity, and would be very interested in this application of linear equations.
Setting/Delivery: I would use this as a group activity in class to introduce the concepts, and then send the remainder of the assignment home for them to finish collecting data and completing the investigation.
Why did you choose this RWLO? I chose this RWLO because it is easily adaptable to my current courses, and it provides students with a novel problem solving situation.

RWLO Title: Confidence Interval

RWLO Address: http://www.rwlo.org/users/2048/RWLO/Confidence_Intervals.doc

Description: Create a confidence interval based on the historical snowfall of Chardon, Ohio. Students will be asked to calculate the mean, standard deviation, and confidence interval for a set of observations.

Your Course: Math 1410 & 1420 (Prob & Stats I & II)

Rationale: This RWLO will show students why (and how) confidence intervals are important.

Setting/Delivery: After introducting confidence intervals I would assign this RWLO as a homework assignment. This assignment would then serve as a starting point for the next class.

Why did you choose this RWLO? I grew up in Chardon, Ohio.

RWLO Title: ARE YOU A SHOP ALCOHOLIC-in- TRAINING (AiT) TYPE PERSONALITY?
RWLO Address (http:// http://www.rwlo.org/users/4084/Internet%20Comparison%20Shopping%20Project/Internet_Shopping_RWLO.doc
Description: Take an opportunity to review your budget restraints and how it relates to your background as a college student in the 21st century.
Your Course: Business Communications BADM 2010 [To be used as an introductory project/assignment after students have been placed in specific groups to review their small-group interaction skills. Mini student presentations will be made to assess their presentation-platform skill level at the beginning of the course.
Rationale: Students usually need a boost to verbally present information to a small group. This RWLO project will serve as a motivator and/or a benchmark to know informally where to begin working on their end-of-course presentation skill level at the very beginning of the class.
Setting/Delivery: (How will you implement this RWLO--ex. Online? Lab? Presentation? Group work?, etc. If you plan to modify or adapt this RWLO, please include your ideas.) The Business Communication [BADM 2010] class is a class designed to improve students’ business skills—from a verbal and written communication skillset in one term (16 weeks.)

Why did you choose this RWLO? Everybody does a little shopping at one point in their career and lifetime.

RWLO Title: Linear equations applied to flight distance

RWLO Address: http://www.ciese.org/pathways/rwlo/search.php?filter=math&secondary_id=11

Description: This RWLO has students use the internet to access information on an airline’s flight travel time, ground speed, time remaining in flight, and distance between 2 cities. The student will capture a location of the plane as it is flying. From that information, the student develops a linear equation for the flight time and graphs it.

Your Course: Math 129A (Pre-calculus part I)

Rationale: Students in this course begin with a review of Algebra I and II topics, including the equations of lines. I believe that their prior experiences do not involve any “real life” applications of linear models where they must obtain data.

Setting/Delivery: I will need to really work through the RWLO taking more time than what is allowed here in the workshop. I do think that there will probably need to be a few more explanations than what the RWLO has. I plan on offering it to students as an extra credit assignment.

Why did you choose this RWLO? Living near several major airports, our students are familiar with the large numbers of flights departing daily. I don’t think that they ever thought of flight times being modeled linearly.

RWLO Title: Bath Time with Archimedes

RWLO Address: http://www.rwlo.org/users/10774/Bath%20Time%20with%20Archimedes/Bath_Time_with_Archimedes.doc

Description: Students use a bathtub simulation to observe bath water depth as a function of time as they manipulate the faucet, plug, and whether or not Archimedes is in the tub. The applet dynamically shows the water in the tub while a graph of the depth function and a table of values develop in real time. Students create a piecewise function and observe the connections between the graph of the function, its table of values, and the actions they take to change the water level.

Your Course: Algebra II
Rationale: This is a nice introduction to functions that makes important connections among the different representations.

Setting/Delivery: If my classroom is properly equipped, I will demonstrate the applet in class so that students will know what to expect. The RWLO will be an out-of-class assignment. For one of the trials, I’ll suggest that the students make changes at 10-second intervals (because the table of values is set up in that way) and use the data to find linear equations of pieces of the graph.

Why did you choose this RWLO? Though the applet was designed for 10-14 year- olds, there are many powerful ideas here. It looks like a fun activity that can draw students in.
